Introduced in 1965, the Citroën DS21 was an uprated and upgraded version of the groundbreaking DS19, featuring a larger 2,175 cc engine and an improved interior. As with its predecessor, the DS21 was offered as a sedan (berline) and station wagon (break). Select styling by Robert Opron brought a revised headlamp treatment by 1967. The visually striking, low-production, and stunningly priced open and closed coachbuilt versions of the DS continued to be produced by renowned Parisian carrosserie Henri Chapron.

Beginning in February 1961, Chapron-designed, factory-built DS cabriolets, known as d’Usine, or “from the factory,” were catalogued and offered by Citroën. Available only by special order, these handsome cabriolets were priced new at nearly twice the cost of a standard ID19 sedan. Production of these special DS cabriolets ended in August 1971 with marque authorities citing 1,365 examples built in total.

According to a copy of its former French Carte Grise registration document on file, this 1969 Citroën DS21 d’Usine Cabriolet was first registered on February 28, 1969. Prior to acquisition by the Mullin Collection, it resided in Saint-Lyé, Aube in north-central France. Being a 1969 model, it retains the Weber-carbureted, 2,175 cc inline four-cylinder engine characteristic of the DS21, which is paired with a three-speed semiautomatic gearbox. Beautifully restored in present ownership, the Citroën is offered with the rarely seen auxiliary hardtop.
